The Last Train to Yesterday

The Last Train to Yesterday She had been standing there for only a few minutes, but it felt like she had been waiting for years. The rain had covered the railway tracks with a thin mirror of light. Around her, people stood silently on the platforms, watching the approaching train. No one knew why she was there. Some whispered her name. Some looked away. Some simply waited to see what would happen. She could hear the train getting closer. She could feel the trembling of the rails beneath her feet. But she wasn't waiting for death. She was waiting for someone. Years ago, she had promised herself that she would never leave without saying goodbye. Tonight, she finally understood that the person she had been waiting for was never coming back. The train was almost there. The crowd grew restless. A station clock continued ticking as if nothing extraordinary was happening. She closed her eyes. For one last moment, she remembered a different evening—another station, another life, and a voice telling her: “If you ever get lost, wait for me.” She opened her eyes. The train was only seconds away. And suddenly, she stepped away from the tracks. The crowd gasped. She turned toward the empty platform and whispered: “I finally found my way home.” The train passed. And when the smoke disappeared, she was gone. Only an old photograph remained on the tracks. On the back, someone had written: “Some people wait for a train. Others wait for the courage to leave.”
